Open Question: Orthodox Christmas - a question?

Hi all, Happy Christmas to all Orthodox Cristians and everyone else! I would like to clarify...Most Eastern european Orthodox christians,e.g. Russians, celebrate their Christmas on the 7th of January,whereas the Western countries,mainly christian Catholics, celebrate it on the 25th of December. Ive heard that is because of a change in the calender in 1582 which means that Orthodox follow the "old/ original" calender and the Catholics follow a " new calender"...am l correct in this?...
